Dighton High School's football team will trade part of a practice session for rakes and trash bags as it joins the town's fall cleanup day, Open Space Committee members said this week.

DIGHTON --

COMMUNITY -- The Dighton Open Space Committee, meeting Sept. 16, reported 17 people signed up so far for the town's upcoming cleanup day and said the Dighton High School football team has committed to take part. Committee Chairman Jonathan Gale said he spoke by phone with Glenn Cabbage, who confirmed "the high school football team is going to be using their practice that morning to come and do our cleanup," adding that players are "all being told that they're supposed to show up." Rather than sending the team to a single location, organizers plan to split players among "a couple to at least two, maybe three spots," with players moving to additional sites once finished. Gale said "there's still a good possibility" the Scouts and "one of the other sports programs" will also participate. St. Nicholas parish said it could not send volunteers because of a scheduled spaghetti dinner. Cleanup sites under discussion include the island near Zeke's on Route 44, Elm Street, Brook Street, Richmond Hill, and Pleasant Street including the boat ramp. The Board of Health is supplying gloves, and the town will post cleanup-day signs at Center and Williams streets and in front of Town Hall.
