Dighton Historical Commission elects new officers, targets historic preservation list

The commission unanimously elected Pat Gails as chair, Zach Karen as vice chair, and Rafa as clerk at its July 8 meeting, then immediately turned to a question of how to protect historic structures more proactively. A house at 3025 Elm Street — identified as the John Simmons house — drew concern after a Facebook thread flagged possible demolition; Gails reported that building inspector Jim confirmed the new owners hold no demolition permit and are rehabbing the structure, but missing windows and lumber piled out front alarmed members. The FY26 budget stands at $600, with a separate $300 grant in hand for walking tour brochures estimated at $85 per 100 copies. The commission also confirmed it will advance a Community Preservation Committee-funded National Register nomination for the Mount Hope Finishing Company after Massachusetts Historical Commission staffer Ben Haley confirmed the program "remains active" despite federal funding uncertainty.
